The Morning Pages Month
Thirty mornings of free writing, each with a way in — and four sessions that mine what you wrote.
A 30-session guided journaling program from the Journal for iPad app. The first week is free below.
Who it's for
“I've heard morning pages help, but a blank notebook at 6am just stares back at me.”
How it works
- Write in the morning, before the day starts talking. One page is enough.
- Every seventh session is a harvest: you read your own week back and pull out what mattered.
- The instruction is a way in, not a subject. Leave it behind as soon as the pen is moving.
- Missing a morning is not failure. Start the next session where you left off, in order.
The route
- Week One · Get The Pen Moving — A way into the page every morning. (7 sessions)
- Week Two · Write It Honestly — Past the version you'd read out loud. (7 sessions)
- Week Three · Mine What'S There — The ideas that keep coming back. (7 sessions)
- Week Four · Make It Yours — The morning you'd build, and what continues. (9 sessions)
Before you start
Answer these three questions on the first page:
- What time do I get up, and what time will I write?
- What do I hope thirty mornings will change?
- Where will this journal live so I can reach it half asleep?
Week one — free
Day 1 · Before the phone
Write until the page is full. Start with what you were thinking about before you picked up a pen.
- What did I reach for first this morning?
- What am I not writing down?
Day 2 · The last thing before sleep
Start with whatever was in your head as you fell asleep, and keep going.
- Did it follow me into the morning?
- What would settle it?
Day 3 · Complaints, unedited
Fill the page with complaints. Nothing is too petty. Don't be fair.
- Which complaint is actually a request?
- Which one would I be embarrassed to say out loud?
Day 4 · The undone
Write about everything you haven't done yet. Don't plan — just write it out.
- What's been on the list longest?
- What would happen if I dropped it entirely?
Day 5 · A room from before
Describe a room you knew well years ago. Keep writing until the page ends.
- What did I remember that surprised me?
- Who else is in that room?
Day 6 · Today, if it went well
Write the day ahead as if it goes well. Concrete, hour by hour.
- What in that is actually in my control?
- What is the first hour?
Day 7 · The harvest
Read back this week's pages. Copy out the three lines that still have heat in them.
- What did I write about more than twice?
- What did I circle without landing on?
