Gratitude, Specifically
Thirty sessions without a single list of three: one detail, one person, one moment at a time.
A 30-session guided journaling program from the Journal for iPad app. The first week is free below.
Who it's for
“Gratitude lists stopped meaning anything by day four and I want something with actual weight.”
How it works
- One session at a time, in order. Detail beats quantity — one thing, described well.
- Sessions 8, 15 and 22 open with a checkpoint on what you've written.
- Two sessions ask for letters meant to be sent. Sending them is the point.
- If a session feels false, say so on the page. Forced gratitude is worse than none.
The route
- Week One · One Detail At A Time — No lists of three. One thing, described properly. (7 sessions)
- Week Two · The People — Including the letter you actually send. (7 sessions)
- Week Three · The Hard Parts — What a bad year gave you, honestly. (7 sessions)
- Week Four · What You Keep Noticing — Turning a month into a habit. (9 sessions)
Before you start
Answer these three questions on the first page:
- What made me start this now?
- What do I want to be able to see by the end?
- When will I write, and what will remind me?
Week one — free
Day 1 · One minute of today
Pick one minute from today that was good. Describe it until someone else could see it.
- What made it that minute and not the one before?
- Who else was there?
Day 2 · Something you touched
What object did you use today that you'd miss? Describe it properly.
- Where did it come from?
- What would replacing it cost — in money and in time?
Day 3 · A face
Whose face were you glad to see today, even briefly? What did it look like?
- When did I last tell them anything like that?
- What do they do that I've stopped noticing?
Day 4 · The thing that worked
What worked today that could easily not have? Trace the chain of people behind it.
- Who did the invisible part?
- What happens on the day it doesn't work?
Day 5 · A taste, a sound, a smell
Write one sensory detail from today so precisely that it comes back reading it.
- When did I last stop for this on purpose?
- What does it remind me of?
Day 6 · Something you almost lost
What do you still have that could have gone? Write about having it now.
- How close was it?
- What changed after?
Day 7 · The week, in details
Read this week back. List the details you wrote — no summaries, only the specifics.
- Which detail still works when I reread it?
- Which entry was written on autopilot?
