Say It Straight
Thirty sessions on the lines you never drew: where they're missing, the words, and the aftermath.
A 30-session guided journaling program from the Journal for iPad app. The first week is free below.
Who it's for
“I say yes when I mean no, and by the time I notice I'm already resentful.”
How it works
- One session at a time, in order. Week three asks you to actually speak, so weeks one and two matter.
- Sessions 8, 15 and 22 open with a checkpoint on what you've written.
- Half of this programme is planning and rehearsal: exact words, exact day.
- If a relationship here is unsafe rather than uncomfortable, this is not the right tool — get help.
The route
- Week One · Where The Line Is Missing — Resentment, apologies, hours you didn't choose. (7 sessions)
- Week Two · What You'Re Protecting — The rule, the fear, and the words themselves. (7 sessions)
- Week Three · Saying It — Small one first, then the one that matters. (7 sessions)
- Week Four · Holding It — Tests, slips, and standing rules. (9 sessions)
Before you start
Answer these three questions on the first page:
- Which relationship made me start this?
- What do I want to be true in thirty sessions?
- Who can I tell about what I'm doing?
Week one — free
Day 1 · The yes you regretted
What did you agree to recently that you wished you hadn't? Write how it happened.
- What made no feel impossible in that moment?
- How long did the regret take to arrive?
Day 2 · The resentment list
List what you're quietly resentful about right now. Resentment marks a missing line.
- Which of these have I ever mentioned out loud?
- Which one is oldest?
Day 3 · The time audit
Where did your week actually go, and which hours were spent on other people's priorities?
- Which hours did I give without being asked?
- What did I not do because of them?
Day 4 · The apology habit
What did you apologise for this week that wasn't your fault?
- What was I actually saying instead of sorry?
- Who taught me to open that way?
Day 5 · The over-explanation
When did you last justify a decision far more than it needed?
- Whose approval was I collecting?
- What would the one-line version have been?
Day 6 · The cost so far
What has having no line cost you — in sleep, money, health, or people?
- Which cost is hardest to write down?
- What would another year of this look like?
Day 7 · The map
List the relationships where a line is missing. Mark the two that matter most.
- Which one am I most afraid to change?
- Which would be easiest to start with?
